Plasmodium knowlesi

Plasmodium knowlesi is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium that naturally infect long-tailed monkeysMacaca fascicularis ). [1] The parasite is commonly found in Southeast Asia and have attacked humans. [1] P. knowlesi is transmitted by mosquitoes of the group Anophleles leucosphyrus as a vector of intermediaries, one of which is Anophleles latens . [2]
This parasite has the ability to reproduce every 24 hours in the blood and this can potentially cause death. [3] Humans are infected by P. knowlesi tendency to decrease the number of platelets in the blood and this can be used to detect the disease. For examination or diagnosis of these parasites, examination of the blood supply can be thin and thick then observed under a microscope. The appearance of P. knowlesi similar to P. malariae , but further investigation is usually done in molecular detection using PCR . [4] For treatment, patients with infection P. knowlesi can be given drugs chloroquine and primaquine. [4]
